ABU DHABI: The Federal Tax Authority – FTA – announced remarkable achievements in its digital VAT refund systems throughout 2024, reflecting continuous advancements in digital transformation.
The VAT refund service for UAE nationals constructing new residences approved 7,520 applications worth AED 704.38 million in 2024, contributing to a cumulative total of 34,900 applications valued at AED 2.9 billion since the service’s inception over six years ago. Compared to 2023, these figures reflect a 27.52% rise in applications and a 32% increase in monetary value.
The service has grown consistently since 2018, with applications rising from 270 (worth AED 9.11 million) in 2018 to over 8,250 applications (worth AED 720.12 million) in 2023.
The VAT refund system for tourists also experienced significant growth. The number of retail outlets linked to the system expanded to 17,847 outlets, a 9% increase from 2023. Additionally, 97 self-service kiosks were operational by the end of 2024, up from 82 the previous year, reflecting an 18.3% increase. These kiosks, strategically placed in malls, hotels, and airports, streamline refund procedures for tourists in under two minutes.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, FTA Director-General, attributed these achievements to the authority’s commitment to adopting global best practices and advancing the UAE’s digital transformation strategy. He stated, “The VAT refund systems for UAE nationals and tourists have undergone continuous enhancements to simplify procedures and improve efficiency. These efforts align with the leadership’s vision to create seamless, proactive digital services that enhance customer satisfaction.”
Looking ahead, Al Bustani emphasised that the FTA will introduce new projects in 2025 to further support the UAE’s smart transformation strategy and maintain its position as a global leader in innovative tax systems.
