KANDLA: DP World, in collaboration with India’s Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and European tech firm Nevomo, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of autonomous magnetic freight movement within port ecosystems.

Announced on July 15, 2025, the MoU outlines a pilot project featuring Nevomo’s MagRail technology at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. The initiative marks India’s first attempt at introducing self-propelled, electric-powered wagons using magnetic levitation and linear motor technology over existing rail lines inside an operational port.

The 750-metre pilot project will test the capacity, speed, and sustainability of MagRail-based cargo transport in real conditions. The system aims to reduce fuel usage, cut emissions, and enhance container and bulk cargo throughput—aligning with India’s National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

Commenting on the initiative, Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA, said the partnership “enhances capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands” while strengthening India’s logistics framework.

DP World’s Group Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem added, “This pilot exemplifies how innovative technologies can redefine freight systems. We are committed to future-proofing our terminals with faster, greener, and more efficient solutions.”

The MagRail pilot is a first-of-its-kind in India, designed to automate short-haul cargo movements and reduce reliance on traditional diesel trucks. DP World and DPA aim to scale the system nationally if successful, reshaping India’s port logistics ecosystem.
