The UAE Media Council flagged a social media ad with false medical claims and has summoned the advertiser for legal action.
ABU DHABI: The UAE Media Council has taken firm action against a social media advertiser after identifying a campaign that breached national media regulations. The incident underscores the Council’s determination to ensure advertising content across all platforms remains responsible, transparent, and trustworthy.
According to the authority, the advertisement in question contained unsubstantiated medical and therapeutic claims for a product that had not been approved by the relevant health authority. It also carried misleading information, falling short of professional and ethical media standards. In response, the Council has summoned the advertiser and initiated legal measures in line with existing legislation.
The UAE Media Council reaffirmed that safeguarding the public is its top priority. Misleading or unverified claims in advertisements, particularly those relating to health and wellbeing, pose serious risks to consumers. By closely monitoring digital platforms, the Council aims to protect residents from misinformation while also holding advertisers accountable for the content they publish.
Officials stressed that the UAE has developed a comprehensive framework of regulations and executive guidelines that advertisers and influencers must follow. These rules cover truth in advertising, accuracy of claims, respect for cultural values, and transparency about sponsorships. The system is designed to prevent the spread of harmful or deceptive messages while promoting a safe and credible digital space.
The Council also highlighted its ongoing efforts to raise awareness among businesses and influencers about the importance of compliance. Training initiatives, public advisories, and continuous monitoring all form part of the strategy to uphold media integrity and build public trust.
Advertisers are reminded that legal consequences will follow any attempts to mislead the public, particularly in sensitive sectors such as healthcare, wellness, and financial services. The Council concluded by urging all stakeholders to adopt best practices that strengthen the UAE’s position as a global leader in responsible and ethical media.
