ABU DHABI: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced the completion of 95 per cent of the first phase of its Environmental Centennial 2071 plan, marking a major leap in the emirate’s journey toward becoming a global leader in climate and environmental action by 2071.

Launched in 2023, the long-term roadmap aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision for a sustainable, resilient future. Within just two years, the plan has already delivered 359 achievements, with 63 initiatives surpassing their goals. Key government partners played a crucial role, including Abu Dhabi’s Departments of Energy, Culture and Tourism, Public Health, and Agriculture, among others. The UAE also engaged over 24 international partners to help deliver the initiative.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mazrouei of EAD highlighted that these milestones reflect the emirate’s collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to sustainability.

The plan focuses on three core pathways. Under “A vibrant emirate, thriving in nature,” 88 per cent completion was achieved. Key accomplishments include the UAE’s first hydrogeological map, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture strategies, and improved air quality monitoring. Initiatives like micro-mobility infrastructure updates and bicycle safety guides also advanced urban sustainability.

The “Green force resilient to climate change” pathway exceeded expectations with 102 per cent completion. This included the launch of the Environmental Climate Adaptation Plan 2025–2050, smart agriculture standards, hydrogen and electric bus projects, and the Marine Sector Sustainability Action Plan.

Under “Enablers for future environmental leadership,” a 97 per cent milestone was reached. Highlights included dark sky policies, AI-driven soil monitoring, and the debut of Sukun, the world’s largest 3D-printed water taxi.

With the first phase nearly complete, Abu Dhabi is now planning the next phase to secure long-term environmental impact and international leadership.
