The Emissions Gap Report 2024, titled No more hot air… please! is a stark reminder that if nations don’t boost their climate efforts quickly, our planet will warm beyond the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, making it a thing of the past. This latest edition, the 15th in the series, gathers insights from top climate experts, analyzing greenhouse gas trends and offering potential solutions to tackle global warming.

So, what’s the big deal this year?
The report makes it clear: countries need to up their promises and, more importantly, deliver serious cuts to greenhouse gas emissions in their next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These are due in early 2025 before COP30. The world needs a 42% reduction in emissions by 2030 and 57% by 2035 to stay on track for that 1.5°C target.

Without stronger ambitions and immediate action, the planet could see temperature rises between 2.6°C and 3.1°C by the end of this century. That’s bad news for everyone—people, economies, and ecosystems alike would face crippling impacts.

However, there’s still hope! Technologies like solar, wind, and reforestation offer great potential for rapid emissions cuts. But here’s the catch: it’s not enough to just talk about it. Countries need to act now with stronger NDCs, while taking a whole-of-government approach. This means aligning environmental and socioeconomic goals, boosting international collaboration, especially in reforming global finance, and encouraging the private sector to step up.

And let’s be real—the G20 nations, particularly the biggest polluters, have to pull their weight to make this happen. It’s crunch time, and the future of the planet depends on swift, coordinated action.

Now is not the time for hot air—it’s time for serious climate action!
