DUBAI: The UAE Ministry of Economy has introduced a Green Intellectual Property (IP) roadmap aimed at accelerating sustainable innovation, technology localisation, and circular economy initiatives. The three-month plan is set to enhance intellectual property frameworks, driving the country’s transition to a greener economy.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, highlighted the strategic role of Green IP in fostering environmental sustainability. He stated, “Thanks to our leadership’s vision, the UAE has implemented transformative initiatives in the intellectual property sector, positioning it as a pillar of sustainable economic growth.”

Coinciding with UAE Innovation Month, the roadmap aligns with the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, reinforcing the country’s global innovation leadership. The UAE will collaborate with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to implement the roadmap’s objectives, encouraging green and sustainable inventions.

At a media briefing in Dubai, Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, emphasised that sustainability has been integral to UAE’s development. He noted that the Green IP roadmap aims to integrate intellectual property into sustainable innovations, protecting eco-friendly projects and ensuring strong legal frameworks for patents related to environmental conservation.

A key target is to increase sustainable patents to 8% of total registrations. The UAE, which saw 3,622 patent applications in 2024, continues to enhance IP legislation, covering industrial property, trademarks, and copyrights. The roadmap also promotes digital solutions and advanced technologies to boost the country’s standing in the Global Innovation Index (GII).

Currently, the UAE ranks first regionally in the GII 2024, further solidifying its role as a global leader in innovation and sustainability.
