The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched the ‘Our Green Emirates’ initiative under the ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme. This initiative encourages individuals, families, and institutions to expand green spaces, fostering a culture of sustainable agriculture across the UAE.
The annual ‘Planting Week,’ part of the programme, began in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Events raised awareness of planting’s role in enhancing green spaces, preserving local plant heritage, and ensuring food security. School students in Fujairah partnered with the Fujairah Environment Authority to plant native tree species. Meanwhile, Ras Al Khaimah’s Wadi Isfani saw the inauguration of a new park, involving local communities and schoolchildren in planting activities.
Her Excellency Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasised the initiative’s alignment with the UAE’s vision to preserve its natural heritage and modernise agriculture. “‘Planting Week’ embodies the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, promoting sustainability, local agriculture, and food security,” she stated.
‘Planting Week’ has been an annual initiative for over 40 years, promoting green practices and public engagement. It complements the ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to strengthen partnerships with the private sector, modernise agriculture with cutting-edge technologies, and expand sustainable green spaces.
Events during the week include community planting, training on tree care, and education about sustainable practices. MOCCAE officials, along with local authorities and organisations, actively participated to inspire community engagement in environmental conservation.
The UAE green initiative continues to advance climate sustainability, enhance food security, and strengthen community connections with nature, creating a lasting impact nationwide.
