DUBAI: The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced that the Midday Break – the ban on working in direct sunlight from 12:30 to 3:00 pm – has officially ended yesterday, September 15, 2024. This initiative started on 15th June, aiming to protect workers from the harsh summer heat and ensure a safe working environment.

MoHRE revealed the Midday Break was a huge success, with an impressive 99.9% compliance rate across companies. The initiative also included 6,000 rest stations for delivery workers during the break hours, making the heat more manageable.

Mohsin Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at MoHRE, praised companies for their commitment to the regulations, saying their efforts boosted worker safety and productivity. He added that many businesses went above and beyond, creating their own heat stress prevention initiatives.

Throughout the Midday Break period, MoHRE conducted around 134,000 inspections, with only 51 violations reported. This shows just how aware and responsible companies have become when it comes to their workers’ safety.

Al Nassi also noted that this initiative has been a vital part of UAE labour law for 20 years. The Ministry’s partnerships with various entities helped raise awareness, providing food, drinks, and cooling equipment to workers.

During the break, companies were required to provide shaded areas, hydration, and cooling supplies, as well as first aid at work sites. The community also got involved, reporting violations and giving feedback through MoHRE’s online platforms.
