Dubai: In Dubai’s bustling streets, electric scooters are becoming a popular choice for getting around town. But with their rise in popularity comes a big concern: safety.

In the first half of 2024, the numbers tell a serious story: four people died, one was badly hurt, and many others were injured in e-scooter accidents. Dubai Police also caught 7,804 people breaking e-scooter rules and confiscated 4,474 scooters and bikes.

Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, who oversees operations at Dubai Police, is worried about the increasing number of accidents involving e-scooters. “We’ve seen too many accidents,” Al Ghaithi said, urging better safety practices and stricter rules to protect riders and pedestrians alike.

Al Ghaithi explained the penalties for breaking these rules, like speeding or riding recklessly. He stressed that staying in designated lanes, wearing helmets, and avoiding risky riding conditions are crucial to prevent accidents.

Dubai Police isn’t just enforcing rules—they’re also running campaigns to teach riders how to ride safely. They hope these efforts will make people more aware and prevent accidents.

As Dubai embraces e-scooters as part of city life, safety remains a top priority. With everyone’s help, including reporting problems through the “Police Eye” service, the city hopes to make its streets safer for everyone who uses them.
