DUBAI: HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), shared that DEWA has now installed over one million smart water meters across Dubai. By June 2024, every water meter in the city is smart, meeting top international standards.

Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s work to improve its smart systems and infrastructure. These upgrades are part of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which focuses on innovation and boosting Dubai’s position as a global leader in the digital economy. DEWA’s latest systems have helped cut water losses from 7.06% in early 2018 to 4.6% at the end of 2023. This has saved 12.5 billion gallons of water, which is worth AED 451.3 million.

Smart meters are crucial to this effort. They allow DEWA to manage data securely and automatically. Customers can see their water use instantly and manage it easily. They can also spot and fix leaks quickly, which helps save water and supports sustainable development.

DEWA’s new Hydro Insight system, a world first for a water utility, monitors all smart meters and spots problems in just one hour. This system, developed in-house, improves reading accuracy and billing. DEWA issues water bills remotely using the advanced SAP platform, making the process more efficient.
