Recently an instagram post uploaded by Indian cricket league team, Kolkata Knight Riders on their IPL20 win was mistakenly labelled as AI generated. The team, owned by Bollywood Superstar, Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) had won the Tata IPL 2024 Final match against Hyderabad Sunrisers.
Surprisingly, the labeling mistake appears in the mobile app but not on their desktop website. This particular incident shows the challenge Meta faces in correctly identifying when AI is used in photos.

Back in February, Meta announced they would start labeling photos edited or created using AI on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. From May onwards, they began tagging some photos with a “Made with AI” label. The goal was to let users know when AI technology was used to enhance or create images.
However, this labeling system has faced criticism. Users and photographers noticed mistakes where photos edited with regular tools were wrongly labeled as “Made with AI.” This issue frustrated many photographers who felt their work was inaccurately tagged.
In a February blog post, Meta explained that utilized metadata of images to detect the label. “We’re building industry-leading tools that can identify invisible markers at scale — specifically, the “AI generated” information in the C2PA and IPTC technical standards — so we can label images from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock as they implement their plans for adding metadata to images created by their tools.”
However, despite assurances, there are reports of many photos on Meta’s platforms that are obviously created using AI, yet Meta’s algorithm has not labeled them.
As Meta keeps improving how they label photos, they must fix these issues to make sure their system tells users the truth and keeps trust with photographers and everyone else.
