DUBAI: Technological advances, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), have revolutionised sports in recent decades, enhancing performance, training, and fan experiences. AI is now pivotal in sports, impacting areas like training, injury prediction, nutrition, and performance analysis.
AI-driven data analysis allows personalised training plans tailored to an athlete’s past performance and physical capabilities. Clubs in the UAE and globally adopt AI to optimise training programmes by monitoring athletes’ health and performance data, enabling customised individual and group plans. Real-time tools like smartwatches and motion trackers provide immediate performance insights, helping coaches adjust training strategies based on players’ conditions.
Virtual reality (VR) technology powered by AI further advances training by simulating real-life game scenarios, sharpening reflexes and strategic thinking. These innovations are transforming not just how athletes prepare but also how fans interact with sports.
A report by G42, a leading Abu Dhabi-based AI company, titled The Future of Sports and AI, was unveiled during GITEX 2024. Peng Xiao, CEO of G42, highlighted AI’s transformative role, saying, “AI will revolutionise how we play and watch sports, enabling athletes, coaches, and fans to experience unprecedented advancements, pushing human potential to new limits.”
Additionally, AI is enhancing facility management, gymnasium utilisation, and broadcasting, according to Sebastian Lancestremere of Microsoft. Dr. Ahmad Saad Alsharif, Chairman of the Association for Sports, emphasised that sports now integrate modern technology and human innovation, reshaping the industry.
As AI continues to evolve, its role in sports at all levels becomes indispensable, driving progress in athletic performance, operational efficiency, and fan engagement.
