SearchGPT, considered as the new Google and Perplexity competitor, will start as a limited prototype and eventually be added to ChatGPT.
OpenAI is launching a new search engine called SearchGPT, which uses AI to give you real-time information from the web. Instead of just showing a list of links, SearchGPT organizes and summarizes the information for you. For instance, if you search for music festivals, it will summarize the details and provide brief descriptions of the events with links. If you ask about planting tomatoes, it will explain the best times and types of tomatoes to plant.

Right now, SearchGPT is in the prototype stage and will be tested by 10,000 users. OpenAI plans to add this search feature to ChatGPT in the future. This new tool is a competitor to Google, which is also adding AI features to its search, and to the startup Perplexity, which has faced criticism for its content use.
OpenAI is working with major news organizations like The Wall Street Journal and Vox Media to develop SearchGPT. Publishers can choose whether or not their content is used and will be properly credited in search results.

Launching SearchGPT as a prototype allows OpenAI to fix any problems, such as incorrect results or content issues. This search engine has been in the works for months, and while it will be free to use initially, OpenAI will need to find a way to make money from it in the future.
