BANGKOK: The UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Team made an inspiring start at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship 2025 in Bangkok, as the women’s team claimed three medals on the opening day. Competing at Huamark Indoor Stadium, the Emirati athletes showcased their strength and skill against elite international competitors, reinforcing the UAE’s rising status in the sport.

Leading the podium charge, Asma Al Hosani captured gold in the -52kg category with a composed performance, defeating her Ukrainian rival in a dramatic golden point round. Aysha Al Shamsi secured a silver medal in the -45kg division, while Balqees Abdulkareem earned bronze in the same weight class.

The event features top-tier athletes across men’s and women’s divisions and includes age categories from Under-14 to Under-21. The UAE delegation includes 110 athletes, with high expectations for a strong medal haul.

Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, hailed the medal wins as the result of consistent national investment in the sport. “These three medals are just the beginning. The unwavering support from our leadership and the commitment of our athletes continue to drive the UAE’s global success in jiu-jitsu,” he said.

Technical Director Mubarak Saleh Al Menhali echoed this sentiment, praising the athletes’ focus and potential for more victories. “This championship provides a real benchmark for our athletes’ progress, and we are confident more medals are on the way,” he stated.

Gold medallist Al Hosani dedicated her win to the UAE and reflected on the challenge of facing one of the sport’s toughest opponents. “It took nearly four minutes of total focus in the golden point round to secure the win. It means everything to me,” she said.

Aysha Al Shamsi celebrated her silver finish as a key milestone in her career. “This experience has motivated me to train harder,” she added. Meanwhile, bronze medallist Balqees Abdulkareem said she is eager to come back stronger: “I was aiming for gold, but this result pushes me to grow.”

The UAE women’s team continues their campaign in the -63kg and -70kg divisions, while the men’s matches kick off with Omar Al Suwaidi competing in the -56kg category. As excitement builds, the nation’s athletes remain focused on delivering top performances.

The early medal success reflects the UAE’s clear sporting vision and the country’s growing investment in developing homegrown talent, infrastructure, and international competitiveness in martial arts.
