SHARJAH: The “Roots and Modernity: A Celebration of Contemporary Mediterranean Arab Art” exhibition has opened at the Sharjah Art Museum, running until 24th November. Organised by the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA) in collaboration with the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, this exhibition showcases 80 stunning masterpieces from the gallery’s permanent collection. The exhibition features works from prominent contemporary Arab artists hailing from the southern and eastern Mediterranean, including North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant. It explores the fascinating blend of traditional influences and modern artistic techniques that define contemporary Arab art. Visitors can expect to see a variety of art forms, including vibrant watercolours, intricate etchings, and expressive bronze sculptures.

Noteworthy pieces include Feast in the Desert by Jordanian artist Fahrelnissa Zeid and Mother Palestine by Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour. These works delve into the cultural, social, and political narratives of the region, offering deep insights into the histories and identities that have shaped Mediterranean Arab art.

In addition to the exhibition, the Sharjah Art Museum will host a panel discussion on 21st September. This event will explore the curatorial vision behind the exhibition and discuss the broader themes of contemporary Mediterranean Arab art. Museum-goers can also participate in workshops, covering various artistic techniques such as clay art, etching, watercolour, and abstract geometric art. These interactive sessions provide a unique opportunity for both adults and children to engage with the art on display.
