Focus keyphrase Rolls-Royce Phantom woodwork: Rolls-Royce marks Phantom’s centenary with an ultra-luxury collection featuring historic 3D woodwork, gold leaf, and sculptural veneer design.
GOODWOOD: In an extraordinary tribute to one of the most iconic nameplates in automotive history, Rolls-Royce has revealed the most intricate woodwork ever crafted by the marque, created to honour the 100-year anniversary of the legendary Phantom. The unveiling introduces three Rolls-Royce firsts — 3D marquetry, 3D ink layering, and 24-carat gold leafing — reserved exclusively for a soon-to-be-revealed Private Collection of just 25 bespoke vehicles.

The development process for this masterwork took over a year, involving dedicated training for artisans and pushing wood to the very edge of its natural tolerance. The result is a dramatic, sculptural treatment that transforms each Phantom door into a canvas for storytelling. The visual narrative weaves together maps, landscapes, experimental models, and floral elements, paying homage to Phantom’s century-long journey.
Each wooden surface is assembled like a mosaic, made from oversized sheets of Blackwood veneer commissioned specifically for this project. Selected for its rich grain and reflectivity, each section is individually assigned and crafted to fit the precise flow of the design. The natural texture of the wood was enhanced using specialised staining to ensure absolute colour uniformity and dynamic light play.
In a striking innovation, speaker grilles are eliminated, replaced by discreet openings milled directly into the wood to maintain visual continuity. Meanwhile, laser-etched designs create varying depths and shades, offering a layered interplay of light, shadow and texture.
To elevate this even further, 3D ink layering introduces raised detailing directly on the surface, while 3D marquetry adds sculpted, engraved elements on top — creating tactile moments of exploration. These techniques allow occupants not just to see but to feel the car’s story.
Adding the final touch is the breathtaking application of 24-carat gold leaf — used to trace roads within the composition, turning Phantom’s most symbolic journeys into luminous golden threads. The gold leaf, just 0.1 micrometres thick, is hand-laid and sealed to meet Rolls-Royce’s exacting standards for durability.
Five craftspeople from Rolls-Royce’s Interior Surface Centre underwent specialist training at West Dean College to master the art of gilding. Every aspect of the composition — from light direction to layering precision — reflects the brand’s unwavering dedication to storytelling through material and form.
This remarkable wood treatment, debuting on a highly exclusive Private Collection, represents a new chapter in contemporary craft — and a fitting tribute to the Rolls-Royce Phantom woodwork legacy.
