Grab a cup of tea to join The Brew News team’s International Tea Day celebrations with Jehangir Restaurant’s Managing Director as our host takes us through the history of tea.
The Brew News team, Shaneer Siddiqui and Babar Siddiqui go on a journey of discovery with their host at Jehangir Restaurant and learnt all about the different names, aromas, types of tea and its history of how tea has evolved over the years.
Tea’s origins trace back over 4,000 years ago, where it was first enjoyed as a medicinal drink in China. The Dutch traders later brought it to Europe, transforming it into a cultural staple rather than just a medicine. The British, in particular, fell in love with tea during their trade with China, sparking a nationwide passion.
In India, tea has been a beloved beverage for centuries. Here, chai takes on various forms, enriched with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, adding layers of flavor that reflect our diverse culture.
The word “tea” itself has interesting roots. In China’s eastern province, it was known as “tea,” while in the north, it was called “che.” As trade flourished along the Silk Road, different cultures adopted variations of these terms, eventually spreading across Europe and beyond.
Tea’s journey wasn’t without controversy. The British, eager to secure their supply, introduced tea cultivation in Assam, India, leading to significant historical implications, including conflicts over trade and even the Opium Wars.
Today, tea isn’t just a beverage; it’s an integral part of global culture, influencing everything from social customs to culinary innovations. At Jahangir, we blend traditional Indian chai with modern gastronomic techniques, offering a unique dining experience that celebrates both heritage and innovation.
As we celebrate International Tea Day on May 21, let’s raise a cup to the millions around the world who enjoy and contribute to this timeless industry. Whether you prefer a classic brew or a spiced chai latte, tea continues to unite and delight us all.
So, here’s to tea—may it continue to steep in our hearts and cups for generations to come!
