ADDIS ABABA: Since the start of 2024, a total of 866 people have died from the monkeypox virus across Africa, according to the African Union’s Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
In its latest update, the Africa CDC reported that 34,297 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in 16 African countries where the virus has officially been detected. These cases have been recorded since January of this year.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, expressed concern about the recent surge, with around 2,500 new cases being reported in the last few weeks. He also highlighted the worrying drop in testing rates, which makes it harder to confirm the virus and manage the outbreak effectively.
