Saying goodbye at the airport just got a bit more interesting in New Zealand, where long hugs could land you in hot water. Dunedin Airport, located on the charming South Island, has decided that three minutes is the maximum cuddle time allowed at its drop-off zone. Yep, you read that right—a three-minute hug limit!
A cheeky sign in the airport’s drop-off area reads: “Max hug time 3 minutes. For fonder farewells please use the car park.” Apparently, the airport isn’t keen on having emotional send-offs turn into a standstill for everyone else.

The chief executive of the airport, who clearly has a sense of humour, explained to Radio New Zealand that the airport wants to keep the drop-off area flowing smoothly without the intense warnings that usually come with such rules. They could have gone with threatening wheel clamps or fines, but instead, they’re opting for a more light-hearted approach.
“Airports are hotbeds of emotion,” he noted, hinting that staff have seen some rather interesting last-minute farewells over the years. It seems some travellers might even be using the drop-off zone for more than just hugs!
Of course, not everyone is a fan of the new rule. Critics have taken to social media to express their discontent, with one person even calling it “inhumane.” But others appreciate the friendly vibe, especially when compared to airports worldwide that are introducing drop-off fees.

No need to panic, though—there won’t be any hug police patrolling the area. Staff may gently remind long-hugging lovebirds to shift their emotional goodbyes to the car park. After all, the aim is simply to keep things moving for everyone while still allowing those precious farewell moments.
