Discover the best birdwatching spots in the UAE during winter as migratory species flock from Asia, Africa, and Europe. Ideal for bird lovers and photographers, each reserve offers unique views and rare birds.

The best time to go birdwatching in the UAE is during the months of November to March. During this time, many species of birds from Europe, Asia and Africa migrate to the region due to its mild winter climate. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned birdwatcher, these locations promise an enriching wildlife experience.

AL WATHBA WETLAND RESERVE, ABU DHABI

This natural reserve is one of the best spots for birdwatching and photography in the UAE. Over 250 bird species are found in this region, which showcases the country’s rich biodiversity. It is especially famous for housing the Greater Flamingo, for which the wetland is a regular breeding spot. Rare bird species like the lesser flamingo and the European golden plover are also found here.

AL QUDRA LAKE, DUBAI

Another spot that is perfect for birdwatchers is Al Qudra Lake, located in the Seih Al Salam desert in Dubai. An ideal winter destination, Al Qudra is home to over 350 species of bird including endangered species like the Houbara bustards. Several other bird species are said to be migrating to the area including Lappet-faced vultures, Glossy Ibis and the Caspian Plover.

KHOR KALBA MANGROVES, SHARJAH

Khor Khlaba Mangroves is the oldest mangrove forest in the country located in Sharjah’s east coast and home to some of the UAE’s rarest birds like the elusive collared kingfisher, a species that only breeds in certain parts of the Arabian Peninsula. It also houses other bird species like tiny willow warblers that migrate due to harsh winters.

WASIT WETLAND CENTRE, SHARJAH

Unlike other natural reserves, Sharjah’s Wasit Wetland Centre was converted from a wasteland to a wetland. The reserve hosts over 120 species of birds in the reserve and is designated for birdwatching as well – the centre has specially designed galleries, bird hides and observation points for birdwatching visitors.

AL QARNAIN ISLAND, ABU DHABI

Al Qarnain Island is a lesser known area home to a large number of birds located 180 kilometres northwest of Abu Dhabi. More recently, The Brew News had brought to the attention of bird watchers as a rare red-footed booby was spotted on the island.

RAS AL KHOR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, DUBAI

Situated in the heart of Dubai, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected mangrove reserve that is home to flamingoes, herons and egrets. This sanctuary is a haven for migratory birds. Unlike a typical bird sanctuary that allows visitors to look at birds in cages, one can instead watch them in their natural habitats in popular spots of the sanctuary called hides, which provide binoculars to get a closer view of the birds.

AL MARMOOM DESERT CONSERVATION

Al Marmoon Desert Conservation is the perfect place to visit if you want to take a trip to the desert and have a birdwatching experience at the same time. Located in the southwest of Dubai, this region witnesses the migration of many fascinating birds like the Pharaoh Eagle Owl, Asian Green bee-eater and the Pied Avocat, which was sighted for the first time at the reserve during June last year.
