ABU DHABI: Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Electricity, Water, and Future Energy Sector at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), inaugurated the Water Conference during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025.

The event united global leaders to address pressing challenges of water and food security, especially in arid regions. Al Kaabi emphasised the importance of managing the water-energy-food nexus to ensure sustainability amidst growing global demand and climate pressures. He highlighted the UAE’s innovative approach, focusing on circular economy principles and advanced technologies to secure equitable access to water, energy, and food for future generations.

Al Kaabi noted the UAE’s prioritisation of water sustainability, citing its scarcity of natural resources and rising development-driven demand. Policies such as expanding membrane-based desalination, integrating renewable energy, and enhancing water reuse align with the UAE’s Water Security Strategy.

The UAE’s achievements include a desalination capacity of 1,855 MIGD and wastewater treatment reaching 823 MCM, with over 70% reused. Additionally, the country has achieved 100% access to clean drinking water and sanitation, reflecting its commitment to sustainable resource management.

Al Kaabi also highlighted the UAE’s success in scoring 83% on the Integrated Water Resources Management Index under SDG 6, with ongoing efforts to enhance alignment between water, energy, environment, and food strategies.

Looking ahead, the UAE is set to co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal. This initiative underscores the nation’s dedication to fostering global partnerships and accelerating the achievement of sustainable water management goals.

The Water Conference serves as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of solutions to address critical water issues, showcasing the UAE’s leadership in sustainability and resource innovation.
