Emergency centre in Abu Dhabi organises large-scale drill at Barakah Nuclear Plant to enhance crisis and safety readiness.

ABU DHABI: The Emergency, Crises and Disaster Management Centre Abu Dhabi (ADCMC) has successfully conducted a large-scale emergency response exercise at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to high-level safety standards and crisis readiness in the energy sector.

Part of the 2025 Annual Joint Exercise Plan for Nuclear Incident Risks, the drill brought together 22 federal and local entities, seven field teams, and 20 operations centres. The initiative tested the efficiency of coordination and response protocols under a complex simulation scenario designed to reflect real-world nuclear emergency conditions.

The strategic exercise assessed crisis management readiness and compliance with the external emergency response plan, while focusing on cross-entity coordination, operational interoperability, and decision-making processes. The simulation spanned both internal and external areas of the Barakah facility.

Major General Ahmed Saif bin Zaitoon Al Muhairi, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police and Exercise Commander, emphasised the UAE’s proactive approach to building a unified crisis response system, in line with international nuclear safety standards. He highlighted the importance of maintaining institutional efficiency and safeguarding business continuity while ensuring public safety.

Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director-General of ADCMC, stated that the Barakah exercise demonstrates practical progress in evaluating crisis coordination, technology deployment, and personnel preparedness. He added that integrated institutional efforts are vital for improving public confidence and strengthening societal resilience.

The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant plays a central role in the UAE’s clean energy and sustainability goals. As a low-carbon electricity source adhering to international safety protocols, it supports the country’s climate neutrality ambitions and positions the UAE as a reliable hub for sustainable energy investment.

This high-level drill reinforces ADCMC’s role in leading emergency preparedness and supports the nation’s broader strategy to develop a resilient, safe, and investment-ready environment.
