On October 25, Dubai unveiled DUMA, a visionary art museum by Tadao Ando that will shape the city’s cultural and architectural future.
DUBAI: The Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA), a monumental new cultural landmark, was officially unveiled on October 25 in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Situated along Dubai Creek and developed by the Al-Futtaim Group, the museum is designed by globally acclaimed Japanese architect Tadao Ando and is set to redefine the city’s creative and architectural landscape.
DUMA is envisioned as a global cultural hub, aligned with Dubai’s ambition to become the capital of creativity and innovation. It will serve as a platform for global artistic dialogue, nurturing an inclusive environment where diverse voices, ideas and art forms can converge. The museum embodies Sheikh Mohammed’s vision to position Dubai as a global destination for creatives and to accelerate the growth of the emirate’s creative economy.
Inspired by Dubai’s maritime heritage, the museum’s design draws from the symbolism of the sea and the pearl. Its curved shell surrounds a circular exhibition hall—representing unity and discovery—with a central lightwell illuminating the space like the shimmer of a pearl. Rising five storeys above water, DUMA features flexible galleries, artist studios, a library, VIP lounges, and a restaurant, making it a vibrant cultural destination.
Exhibitions, artist talks, panel discussions and educational programmes will form a key part of DUMA’s offerings. With purpose-built spaces and a curated calendar, the museum will support art fairs, training programmes and cultural exchanges that promote artistic expression and innovation.
Tadao Ando, a Pritzker Prize-winning architect, is renowned for his minimalist aesthetic and masterful integration of architecture with nature. His design for DUMA reflects Dubai’s openness to the sea and sky while honouring its deep-rooted culture and bold modern vision.
