DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed a major enhancement project for 22 public bus facilities across the emirate, reinforcing its commitment to expanding and modernising the city’s public transport network.
The project covered the renovation of 16 passenger bus stations and six strategic bus depots. These efforts align with the RTA’s goal to provide integrated and safe mobility options that meet the evolving needs of residents, commuters, and visitors. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, said the development encourages greater use of mass transit by offering upgraded infrastructure and enhanced passenger experiences.
The upgraded stations now offer more than just waiting areas, including improved amenities, safer and more comfortable environments, and better integration with Dubai Metro and taxi services. Facilities have been designed with inclusivity in mind, offering enhanced access for People of Determination and support for cyclists.
The refurbished stations—nine in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai—serve 110 routes with peak-hour traffic of approximately 710 buses. Upgrades included better building façades, waiting areas, pedestrian access, prayer spaces, and paving systems.
The six upgraded depots are located in Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwayah, Al Awir, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. These underwent comprehensive upgrades including improved maintenance workshops, engine wash facilities, security systems, and redesigned parking layouts for operational efficiency.
RTA has also focused on improving connectivity through pedestrian-friendly paths, bicycle parking, and safer crossings as part of its first-and-last-mile strategy.
The station upgrades complement RTA’s investment in world-class buses that comply with the Euro 6 low-emission standard. A total of 637 new buses are scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026, including 40 fully electric Zhongtong buses, 400 MAN city buses, 51 Zhongtong city buses, 76 double-decker Volvo buses, and 70 Isuzu Anadolu articulated buses—all tailored to meet Dubai’s urban needs.
