The UAE’s MoEI begins a AED750 million enhancement of Emirates Road to ease congestion and boost traffic capacity by 65 percent.
UMM AL QUWAIN: The UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has officially launched a major road infrastructure project to upgrade Emirates Road, with an investment of AED750 million over a two-year timeline. This strategic initiative aims to tackle congestion, improve traffic flow, and boost road capacity across a key federal corridor.
Spanning 25 kilometres from Al Badee Interchange to Umm Al Quwain, the project will widen the road from three to five lanes in each direction, increasing its capacity to approximately 9,000 vehicles per hour—a 65 percent surge. It will also involve the development of Interchange No. 7, which includes six directional bridges totalling 12.6 kilometres in length, supporting 13,200 vehicles per hour, alongside 3.4 kilometres of new service roads.
The upgrade is designed to slash travel time by up to 45 percent for commuters travelling between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai. This will significantly alleviate congestion on one of the country’s busiest highways while reducing emissions caused by traffic delays.
Youssef Abdullah, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Federal Infrastructure Projects Sector at MoEI, noted that the project is central to the UAE’s vision of building a sustainable, smart, and interconnected transport network that fuels economic growth and improves quality of life.
To ensure minimal disruption during construction, the ministry has developed phased strategies with alternative routes and real-time updates through its digital platforms. Public awareness campaigns are also being rolled out to keep commuters informed and engaged throughout the project period.
