ABU DHABI: Emirati explorer Ibrahim Sharaf Al Hashemi has made history by participating in the first circular helicopter flight around Antarctica.
Taking place from December 4, 2024, to January 17, 2025, the mission marked a groundbreaking achievement, with Al Hashemi becoming the first Emirati to join such an extraordinary feat.
The journey, starting and ending at Union Glacier Camp, spanned 19,050 kilometres over 44 days. This aerial adventure required seven years of meticulous planning, overcoming severe logistical challenges and Antarctica’s unforgiving climate. Freezing temperatures, powerful winds, and remote terrain tested the resilience of the team throughout.
Under the leadership of renowned explorer Frederik Paulsen, the mission offered breathtaking views of the icy continent’s untouched beauty. Participants explored colossal icebergs, vast frozen rivers, and other remote regions, documenting Antarctica’s fragile ecosystem.
