DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police are celebrating a major road safety milestone—traffic fatalities have dropped from 21.7 per 100,000 people in 2007 to just 1.8 in 2024.

The dramatic reduction is thanks to the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy 2022–2026 and a strong partnership between the RTA and Dubai Police. Their teamwork has led to 53 joint initiatives, targeting everything from engineering and awareness to enforcement and tech upgrades.

Pedestrian deaths have also plunged from 9.5 to 0.3, while fatal and serious injury rates dropped from 36.2 to 4. The death rate per 10,000 vehicles? Down from 4.2 to just 0.45.

Awareness campaigns played a huge role. Over 117 million views were clocked for 24 hard-hitting videos showing the dangers of reckless driving. Meanwhile, 255,000 people were reached by safety campaigns.

Enforcement efforts were stepped up too. Nearly 145,000 violations involving delivery bikes were recorded, along with 60,000 pedestrian violations. More than 82,000 vehicles and mobility devices were impounded.

The meeting also spotlighted improvements in high-risk zones with 54 new raised crossings and smarter transport systems. There’s a big push on personal mobility safety, with a new unit to monitor e-scooters and bicycles.

RTA also unveiled its Roads and Transport Plan 2030. It focuses on upgrading road networks, shaping smarter policies, expanding public transport, and boosting intelligent traffic systems.

As bicycle and e-scooter trips continue to grow—46.6 million and 32.3 million respectively in 2024—Dubai’s authorities are determined to keep road safety on track.
