DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has achieved impressive outcomes through its AI-powered Smart Monitoring System, which tracks trainee and instructor behaviour across driving school vehicles in the emirate. Over the past seven months, the system monitored 1,734,790 sessions involving 245,764 trainees—reflecting a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year.

Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department at RTA’s Licensing Agency, the system leverages artificial intelligence and computer vision to improve supervision and enhance safety standards in driver training. Smart cameras installed in training vehicles detect a wide range of violations in real time, including mobile phone use, failure to wear seat belts, unprofessional appearance, and distractions like eating or sleeping.

The technology has enabled a dramatic reduction in inspection time—from 20 minutes to just one minute—while increasing recorded violations fivefold. Operated through the Licensing Intelligent Operations Centre and inspectors’ smart tablets, the system supports RTA’s vision of becoming a world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility.

By integrating AI tools with licensing and permit systems, the RTA is revolutionising how driver training is monitored. The initiative ensures compliance with safety regulations, promotes professional conduct, and enhances operational efficiency across training institutes in Dubai.

Additional features set to launch this year include predictive analytics, which will enable the system to identify behaviour patterns and future risks, helping improve instructor performance and training quality.

The Smart Monitoring System represents a key step in Dubai’s broader digital transformation goals. It also reflects the RTA’s commitment to creating a secure, standardised, and efficient learning environment for all driving school users.
