ABU DHABI: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, joined by UAE Ambassador Mansour Belhoul Al Falasi, UK Ambassador Edward Hobart, and an official delegation. The group was welcomed by Dr. Yousef Al-Obaidli, Director General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, who guided them through the mosque’s iconic halls and grand exterior corridors.
During the visit, the delegation explored the mosque’s cultural mission of coexistence, tolerance, and openness — values inspired by the UAE’s founding father. They also learned about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre’s global role in promoting Islamic culture and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.
The tour offered an in-depth look at the mosque’s rich history, architectural marvels, and the intricate Islamic art displayed throughout. From its striking domes to its elaborate carvings, the mosque’s design showcases the harmony of diverse artistic and architectural influences, making it a symbol of cultural unity.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared his thoughts on the experience, stating, “The UAE and the UK share a long history and a deep relationship that spans centuries. It has been an honour to visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where I have seen the impactful efforts to promote shared human values across religions and cultures, which strengthen the ties between all. People from around the world gather in peace around its beauty, and I have also seen the continued cooperation between the UAE and the UK in this area.”
To mark the end of the visit, the mosque presented Starmer with a unique gift — a compass inspired by its grand chandeliers and a copy of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: A Lights of Peace. This visually rich publication highlights the mosque’s breathtaking architecture, offering a glimpse into its grandeur through award-winning photographs from the “Spaces of Light” competition.
