The UAE has expressed deep solidarity with Afghanistan following a powerful earthquake that killed 800 people and injured 2,500 in the east of the country.

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates has conveyed its sincere condolences and unwavering support to Afghanistan after a powerful earthquake devastated towns in the eastern provinces, resulting in at least 800 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries.

In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the UAE extended heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery for the injured. The statement reaffirmed the UAE’s solidarity with the Afghan people during this humanitarian tragedy.

The earthquake, which struck late Sunday night, had a magnitude of 6.0 and hit the province of Kunar, near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake was shallow—just 8 kilometres deep—making it particularly destructive.

According to the Taliban government, the tremor struck at 11:47 p.m. local time and was followed by multiple aftershocks, further complicating rescue efforts. Most of the casualties were concentrated in Kunar, with entire villages reduced to rubble.

Shocking footage from the scene shows people digging through debris with their bare hands in a desperate attempt to locate loved ones, while helicopters airlifted the injured to emergency medical facilities.

The UAE’s message of solidarity underscores its continued commitment to supporting countries affected by natural disasters, and its longstanding humanitarian stance during times of crisis. The country has consistently provided aid and emergency response assistance to regions in need across the globe.
