Hussain Shawqi wins gold for UAE in 50m butterfly, setting fastest time in Asian Youth Games history at 24.73 seconds.

MANAMA: UAE national swimmer Hussain Shawqi has made sporting history by recording the fastest ever 50m butterfly time at the Asian Youth Games, clocking in at 24.73 seconds and clinching the gold medal in Bahrain. His remarkable performance surpassed his competitors by fractions of a second and elevated the UAE’s medal tally to 19.

Shawqi beat Hong Kong’s Lau Kin James, who finished in 24.97 seconds, while Chinese Taipei’s Wu Chao-Si took bronze with a time of 25.05 seconds. His historic victory came just hours after securing a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle final, completing an exceptional feat of competing in three finals within 24 hours.

In Monday’s qualifiers, Shawqi had already shown his form by clocking 25.16 seconds in the 50m butterfly heats, entering the finals 0.42 seconds ahead of his closest rival.

This achievement strengthens the UAE’s standing at the Games, placing the nation sixth overall and the top-ranked Arab country, with 8 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze medals.

Reflecting on his win, Shawqi credited discipline, commitment, and the continuous support from the UAE National Olympic Committee and Aquatic Sports Federation. “What lies ahead promises to be even greater in future international competitions,” he said.

Emirati head coach Marwan Al Hattawi praised Shawqi’s performance, highlighting the strategic preparations that began in June with swimmer selection and intensive training. “His achievement is a reflection of smart planning and a strong support system,” said Al Hattawi.

With his record-breaking time, Shawqi not only earns his place in the record books but also strengthens the UAE’s growing presence in regional aquatic sports.
