ABU DHABI: Emirati women played a pivotal role in the UAE’s major milestones during 2024, reflecting the nation’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment.
One of the year’s highlights was the UAE’s ascent to 7th place globally on the UN Gender Equality Index 2024, securing its top regional rank. This achievement underscores the success of policies fostering women’s inclusion in national progress.
Government representation grew with the appointment of Sana bint Mohammed Suhail as Minister of Family, following the creation of the ministry. Moreover, the UAE launched the National Policy for Improving Women’s Health, aiming to provide world-class healthcare for women at all life stages.
To boost women’s leadership in business, the Ministry of Economy mandated private joint-stock companies to allocate at least one board seat to women by 2025. This decision aligns with the UAE’s strategy to enhance diversity in leadership.
The Ministry of Economy and the General Women’s Union partnered to advance economic empowerment, signing a memorandum focused on enhancing women’s roles in sustainable development. The initiative supports women entrepreneurs, encouraging greater participation in commercial activities.
Additionally, the General Women’s Union launched the second phase of its Women’s Economic Empowerment Programme. This initiative equips Emirati women with entrepreneurial skills to establish or expand businesses, especially in small and medium enterprises.
During the UAE Government’s annual meetings, agreements were signed to bolster Emirati women’s private sector involvement through joint programmes by the Emirati Talent Competitiveness Council and the UAE Gender Balance Council.
Currently, women make up 70% of UAE university graduates, represent 46% of the workforce, and occupy 50% of Federal National Council seats, reflecting their significant contributions to the nation’s progress.
