UAE skywatchers can view a stunning 82-minute Blood Moon on 7 September during a rare total lunar eclipse.

DUBAI: Stargazers in the UAE are in for a breathtaking celestial display as the UAE total lunar eclipse unfolds on the night of 7–8 September 2025. This rare lunar event, also known as a “Blood Moon,” will bathe the Moon in dramatic red hues for an astonishing 82 minutes, making it one of the longest total eclipses in recent years.

The total eclipse will be visible in Dubai from 19:28 to 00:55 Gulf Standard Time, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 22:11. With 100% visibility and average cloud cover expected to be just 43%, residents can enjoy a spectacular view—especially from low-light locations such as Mleiha’s desert landscape.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow over the lunar surface. During this alignment, sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere is scattered—removing blue and violet light and allowing longer red wavelengths to reach the Moon. This phenomenon, called Rayleigh scattering, gives the Moon its reddish glow.

No special equipment is required to view the UAE total lunar eclipse. Observers simply need to step outside and look up, although binoculars or a telescope can enhance the experience. For those preferring an indoor view, venues like the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library will host live streams and observation sessions.

Enthusiasts can also watch it online on the Dubai Astronomy Group and Al Sadeem Astronomy‘s YouTube channel.

The eclipse will be visible across large parts of Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa—reaching nearly 87% of the global population. This rare event marks the longest total lunar eclipse since 2022 and a unique chance for skywatchers to experience nature’s grandeur.
