Dhaka: Cyclone Remal hit the coastlines of India and Bangladesh on Monday, bringing strong gales and heavy rain that killed at least 16 people and cut electricity supply to millions before losing intensity, as reported by agencies.

With wind speeds reaching up to 135 kph, the storm crossed the area around Bangladesh’s southern port of Mongla and Sagar Islands in India’s West Bengal late Sunday, weather officials reported, making landfall early evening and weakening by Monday morning.

In Bangladesh, Disaster Management Chief Mijanur Rahman said that this resulted in the death of 10 people, including two who died on their way to cyclone shelters.

In West Bengal, India, four people died from electrocution, taking the total number of deaths to six, as per officials.

One person died under falling concrete in the state capital of Kolkata, and a woman died from a mud home collapse on Mousuni island in the Sundarbans delta.
