LOS ANGELES: While Superman is flying high at the box office, it’s his furry friend Krypto who’s winning hearts—and helping real dogs get adopted. After the release of the new “Superman” film, dog adoptions in the U.S. jumped as people fell in love with the superhero’s loyal (and hilarious) dog.

Krypto, a funny and wild superdog in the movie, is based on a real rescue dog named Ozu, adopted by the film’s director, James Gunn. Fans loved Krypto’s mix of zoomies, strength, and silliness—and many started searching for a super pup of their own. Google searches for “adopt a dog near me” shot up 513%, and even searches for “adopt a schnauzer” jumped 299%.

To support the excitement, Warner Bros. and Best Friends Animal Society ran a special campaign offering free dog adoptions from July 1–10. Over 450 dogs found new homes—just in time for the movie’s release.

But experts say adopting a dog should be more than a trend. It’s not just about wanting a dog like the one in the movie—it’s about feeling inspired to do something kind, give a rescue dog a second chance, and maybe even find your own loyal companion like Krypto.

“Adopting a dog is not a lesser choice — it’s a powerful act of compassion. The responsibilities of caring for an adopted dog are no different from for one that’s been bought. Every dog, regardless of where it comes from, deserves commitment, love, and lifelong care,” said Hamad Habash, General Manager at PetsPlus LLC, UAE. “It’s time to end the stigma and start valuing adopted pets equally.”

Krypto isn’t perfect in the movie—he’s messy and stubborn—but that’s what makes him so lovable. His story reminds people that shelter dogs, just like him, deserve a second chance. It’s not about getting a “movie dog,” it’s about giving a real dog a home.

So, if you’re ready to be a hero, maybe your own version of Krypto is waiting at the local shelter. But make sure you give it the love and attention even after the fad ends.
