President Putin announces Russia’s Poseidon unmanned nuclear-powered torpedo passed tests, claiming unmatched depth and speed.

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the successful testing of the Poseidon nuclear-powered unmanned underwater drone—touted as one of the country’s next-generation “superweapons.” The announcement was made during a televised statement on Wednesday, with Putin highlighting the system’s unique capabilities.

Tested on Tuesday, the Poseidon underwater vehicle represents a new class of strategic weaponry. Designed for stealth and endurance, it can reportedly operate at extreme depths and speeds, far exceeding existing underwater systems.

“There is nothing like this in the world in terms of the speed and the depth of the movement of this unmanned vehicle—and it is unlikely there ever will be,” said Putin. He further claimed that the Poseidon drone is currently impossible to intercept, adding to its strategic value in Russia’s defence arsenal.

The drone’s development has been closely watched by defence analysts worldwide, as it combines nuclear propulsion with advanced targeting capabilities, potentially making it a game-changer in naval deterrence strategies.

While the specifics of the test, including location and technical performance, were not disclosed, the announcement comes amid rising tensions between global military powers and ongoing discussions around nuclear deterrence technologies.

Poseidon is part of a broader suite of advanced Russian systems introduced in recent years, aimed at reshaping the balance of global strategic power. The system is designed to operate autonomously, carrying either conventional or nuclear payloads over intercontinental distances.
