WASHINGTON, D.C.: In a bold move to shrink the U.S. government, the Trump administration is offering all federal employees eight months’ salary to resign voluntarily by February 6. The unprecedented buyout aims to reduce the federal workforce swiftly, raising concerns about potential disruptions to government services.
A memo from the Office of Personnel Management outlines the initiative, stating that federal employees will be subject to enhanced performance and conduct standards going forward. It also warns of future downsizing, with the majority of federal agencies expected to reduce their workforce significantly.
Katie Miller, a member of the Department of Government Efficiency, a special Trump administration initiative led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, confirmed that the offer was sent to over two million federal employees. Even a small percentage of resignations could create major economic and societal disruptions, affecting government efficiency, service delivery, and national stability.

The memo insists that Trump’s second administration will prioritise excellence, reliability, and loyalty in government employees. While some departments may expand, most agencies are expected to undergo staffing cuts. Employees who accept the buyout will continue receiving pay and benefits but will be exempt from in-person work until September 30.
The email includes a “deferred resignation letter”, allowing employees to leave with a simple response. Instructions read: “Reply from your government account, type ‘Resign’ in the email body, and hit send.”
As Trump doubles down on his government restructuring agenda, the long-term effects of this historic workforce reduction remain uncertain but could reshape the federal landscape dramatically.
