Elon Musk’s xAI has sued a former employee, accusing him of stealing Grok trade secrets that could benefit competitors like OpenAI.
SAN FRANCISCO: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture xAI has filed a lawsuit against a former employee, accusing him of stealing confidential documents related to Grok, its generative AI chatbot. The lawsuit alleges that ex-staffer Xuechen Li took key trade secrets and transferred them to personal devices before departing to join rival firm OpenAI.
According to court documents, xAI claimed that Li unlawfully accessed and copied proprietary data on cutting-edge technologies that offer features superior to competing products like ChatGPT. The lawsuit suggests that the information could give OpenAI and similar companies a major edge in the AI race, potentially saving them billions in R&D and years of development time.
xAI further alleges that Li took “extensive measures to conceal his misconduct,” including renaming and compressing files, deleting browser histories, and hiding document transfers. Before his departure, Li also requested that xAI repurchase his company shares worth around $7 million.
Now, xAI is seeking a temporary restraining order to compel Li to return all proprietary data, surrender access to any devices or cloud storage, and halt employment with OpenAI or any competitor until the company retrieves its intellectual property.
The lawsuit adds fuel to the ongoing talent war among AI companies, where elite researchers are lured with compensation packages reportedly reaching up to $250 million. xAI, which is already suing OpenAI and Apple for alleged monopolistic practices, continues to fight for dominance in the rapidly growing AI sector.
This legal battle underscores the high stakes in the race to develop the most advanced AI systems, as competition intensifies between tech titans to control the future of artificial intelligence.
