Colm McLoughlin, the former chief executive of Dubai Duty Free (DDF), passed away on Wednesday, October 30, at the age of 81.
He is survived by his wife and their three children: daughters Tyna and Mandy, and son Niall.
McLoughlin was well-known for his friendly nature, humility, and commitment to helping others through various charitable efforts.

Joining the team in 1983 as part of a consultancy from Ireland’s Aer Rianta, McLoughlin played a crucial role in launching Dubai’s duty-free operation. He started as general manager, later becoming CEO and then executive vice chairman. Under his leadership, the business grew from humble beginnings to generate an impressive $2.16 billion in annual sales.
McLoughlin’s vision extended beyond retail. He spearheaded major projects like The Irish Village, Century Village, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, and the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. His leadership earned him significant recognition; he received 86 individual awards, including the ‘Most Distinguished Employee Award’ from H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2000 and the ‘Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award’ in 2014.

Known for his hard work and humility, McLoughlin often attributed his success to staying grounded and honest. His close relationships with Dubai’s leaders, especially H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, played a key role in Dubai Duty Free’s achievements.
In May, McLoughlin stepped down from his role as DDF chief and executive vice chairman after 41 years.
Even in retirement, McLoughlin remained involved as an advisor to Dubai Duty Free and chaired the Dubai Duty Free Foundation, supporting charitable initiatives worldwide. His contributions went beyond business, leaving a lasting impact on Dubai’s global retail reputation and the community he served. McLoughlin’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the industry.
