Bahraini business icon Khalid Kanoo, a key GCC economic figure, has passed away at 84.
MANAMA: Bahrain has bid farewell to one of its most respected business and cultural leaders, Khalid Mohammed Kanoo, who passed away on August 29 at the age of 84. A prominent member of one of Bahrain’s oldest merchant families, Khalid Kanoo Bahrain will be remembered for his profound influence on regional commerce and public life.
Born in 1941, Kanoo chaired the Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Group, one of the Gulf’s largest family-owned conglomerates. Under his leadership, the company flourished, expanding operations across the GCC and solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Middle Eastern business. His unique blend of global business insight—honed in Bahrain and the US—and his unwavering commitment to local values, positioned him as a leading figure in the region’s economic evolution.
Beyond corporate boardrooms, Khalid Kanoo Bahrain was deeply involved in civic and cultural life. As former chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), he was a passionate advocate for private sector empowerment and national development. He also held board roles in top financial institutions, influencing Bahrain’s growing finance ecosystem.
Culturally, his contributions were equally impactful. A keen supporter of heritage and the arts, Kanoo helped launch the Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo Award for Voluntary Work in 1998, focusing on education, culture, and community service. He authored two books: The House of Kanoo – A Century of Trade, and Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Future Challenges Facing GCC Chambers—both widely regarded as seminal business texts.
