The Central Souq, opened in 1978, is a unique landmark in Sharjah. Its stunning blue architecture and Islamic designs make it a popular tourist destination. Located by the Khaled Lagoon, the souq features two main wings connected by bridges. One wing focuses on gold and jewellery, while the other offers carpets, antiques, and fabrics.

With around 600 shops, the Central Souq is a bustling market that attracts visitors from all over the world. Despite global fluctuations in gold prices, the Sharjah Gold Market continues to thrive. Traders report steady demand for gold, especially during special occasions and holidays.

Yemeni trader Ahmed Salah notes that the Central Souq is a model of adaptation and innovation, attracting shoppers from Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and beyond. The market is known for its wide range of unique, high-quality jewellery.

Irish visitor Elaine Cair came to the souq to buy gold jewellery for her mother, enjoying the unique blend of heritage and luxury. Shopper Umm Ali from Oman also prefers the Central Souq for its charm and diverse offerings.

French tourist Nicolas Blandel and Egyptian visitor Doaa Ahmed both find the souq to be a remarkable shopping and tourist destination, offering a unique experience with its rich heritage and luxurious jewellery.

The Central Souq preserves traditional Emirati jewellery, such as the “Al-Maria” necklace, reflecting cultural pride. Emirati women, like Umm Abdullah, cherish these pieces for their historical significance and beauty.

Data from the Department of Economic Development in Sharjah shows that 727 commercial licenses were issued to traders in gold, precious stones, and pearls. Over the past ten years, registered memberships in the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry have grown by 138%.GG & Sons Jewellery is a pioneer in Sharjah’s gold trade.
