New Delhi: According to D V Swamy, Chairman of India’s Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the UAE has emerged as India’s ninth largest destination for seafood exports. Swamy noted that India achieved a record high in seafood exports for the fiscal year 2023-2024, shipping 1.78 million tonnes valued at US$7.38 billion.
Frozen shrimp continued to be the dominant export item both in terms of quantity and value. Specifically, the Middle East region, including the UAE, accounted for 28,571 metric tonnes of frozen shrimp exports, highlighting its significance in India’s seafood trade.
Swamy highlighted that the top 10 export markets collectively constituted 79.89% of India’s seafood exports in terms of US dollar value during the fiscal year 2023-2024. This underscores the strategic importance of these markets to India’s seafood industry.

Established by an act of India’s Parliament in 1972, MPEDA plays a crucial role in promoting and regulating the export of Indian marine products. As a statutory body, MPEDA’s mandate includes enhancing the competitiveness of Indian seafood in global markets and supporting the sustainable growth of the industry.
The UAE’s position as India’s ninth largest seafood export market reflects its growing importance within India’s broader export strategy, driven largely by significant volumes of frozen shrimp exports. This underscores India’s robust performance in global seafood trade, facilitated by entities like MPEDA that work to advance the interests of India’s marine products sector internationally.
