BAKU: The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, with a focus on limiting global warming to 1.5°C. This conference aims to drive action through enhanced national climate plans, transparency, and financing to reduce emissions and address the impacts of climate change. Following the success of COP28 in the UAE, which established the “UAE Consensus,” COP29 will continue global efforts to unite nations for more resilient, sustainable climate solutions.
The UAE’s participation at COP29 includes a national pavilion, showcasing more than 60 thought leadership dialogues and initiatives over the two-week event. Building on the success of COP28, the UAE aims to further accelerate global climate action, emphasizing the need for stronger financing to support vulnerable nations, particularly those in the Global South. The UAE will highlight its progress in renewable energy, decarbonization, climate finance, and youth engagement, while promoting global partnerships like AIM4Climate and the Mangrove Breakthrough.
One key focus of COP29 will be the “Global Climate Finance Framework,” addressing financial needs to support developing countries and communities impacted by climate change. The UAE’s pavilion will host discussions on mobilizing climate finance, advancing food and water resilience, and tackling water scarcity through innovation and AI. It will also spotlight the UAE’s commitment to net-zero emissions, biodiversity, and safeguarding livelihoods.
The COP29 agenda includes negotiations on the Loss and Damage Fund and enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to meet 1.5°C targets. Key areas such as adaptation, climate finance, and green innovation will be central to discussions, with the Green Zone offering exhibitions, workshops, and public participation. COP29 will be crucial in shaping the global response to climate challenges and advancing climate action worldwide.
