DUBAI: Dubai Police’s Maritime Rescue Unit launched a successful mission to free a vulnerable green turtle entangled in abandoned fishing nets off the Dubai coastline. The turtle, spotted by a vigilant beachgoer, was found struggling and unable to surface for air, prompting quick action by authorities to intervene.
Officers responded swiftly, locating the turtle near a popular beach. Under the supervision of Major Marwan Al Kaabi, the team worked with care to disentangle the animal from the debris without causing further injury. After successful release, the turtle was examined by a marine veterinarian onboard the rescue vessel. Observations showed no critical injuries, allowing the turtle to be released back into the gulf waters in healthy condition.
Major Al Kaabi emphasised that these operations highlight the broader mission to preserve wildlife and marine ecosystems in the UAE. The unit regularly conducts patrols to identify and respond to wildlife emergencies, frequently confronting abandoned nets, plastic debris, and illegal fishing gear.
Public awareness campaigns by the police encourage beach visitors to report marine life in distress. This recent rescue adds to previous efforts in rescuing endangered wildlife, showing rising community engagement with environmental causes. Conservation experts view these efforts as vital in reducing harm to dugongs, turtles and other protected species endemic to the Arabian Gulf.
An environmental spokesperson stressed that the UAE’s coastline faces mounting threats from marine pollution, shipping traffic and coastal development. They praised the coordinated efforts of authorities and public watchdogs. The successful rescue was celebrated on social media, prompting reminders about disposing of fishing gear responsibly and participating in beach clean-up initiatives.
