DUBAI: Dubai Metro is marking its 15 years anniversary on Monday, 9th September, celebrating a significant milestone in its journey of transforming urban transportation in Dubai. Since its launch on 9th September 2009, the Metro has played a vital role in the city’s development, providing a reliable and sustainable transportation option for both residents and visitors. It has become a key element in Dubai’s infrastructure, connecting major areas, and supporting the city’s growth as a global business and tourism hub.

Over the past 15 years, Dubai Metro has achieved remarkable success, with approximately 2.4 billion passengers using the service. Its ridership has steadily increased, now averaging 730,000 passengers daily, with a punctuality rate of 99.7 percent. The Metro has also facilitated 4.3 million journeys covering 26.8 million kilometers, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who envisioned the Metro as the backbone of Dubai’s public transportation system. The Metro’s expansion from 52 kilometers to 90 kilometers of track and from 10 to 53 stations reflects its growing importance. The Metro has also provided significant employment opportunities, with 228 Emirati nationals currently working for the Metro’s operating company.

Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai Metro has continued to grow, setting new records for passenger numbers and expanding its network, including the recent Route 2020 extension. The Metro remains a cornerstone of Dubai’s transportation network, upholding its reputation for safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency.
