DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority – RTA – is making significant progress in its bus shelters project, installing 141 of the planned 762 shelters across the city. With the project now 40% complete, RTA aims to finish by the end of 2025, offering modern, user-friendly stops for commuters.
These upgraded shelters are designed to enhance the commuting experience, catering to over 10 bus routes per shelter in some areas. Upon completion, they are expected to serve 182 million riders annually, providing greater convenience and comfort for Dubai’s growing population.
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director General, emphasised the project’s importance in addressing urban expansion and improving public transport infrastructure. He noted, “This initiative reflects RTA’s commitment to delivering premium, world-class mobility services, aligning with Dubai’s vision of enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors.”
The new shelters are strategically placed in densely populated areas and integrated with existing public transport services. Construction began in locations with pre-existing infrastructure, ensuring a faster rollout. These shelters feature air-conditioned spaces, shaded outdoor areas, advertising displays, and screens showing bus maps, schedules, and real-time updates.
Shelters are categorised based on usage:
• Primary shelters: Serving over 750 daily users.
• Secondary shelters: For 250–750 users daily.
• Basic shelters: Catering to 100–250 users.
• Drop-off/pick-up shelters: For under 100 users.
The design adheres to the Dubai Code for People of Determination, offering wheelchair-accessible spaces. This aligns with the “My Community… A City for Everyone” initiative by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which aims to make Dubai inclusive and accessible for all.
With this project, RTA continues to support Dubai’s vision of a sustainable, accessible, and commuter-friendly city.
