DUBAI: On Sunday, September 15, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled two significant bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project. The first bridge, a 2-lane structure spanning 601 metres, is designed to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. It facilitates eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, continuing north toward Al Qusais and Deira.
The second bridge, also 2 lanes but stretching 664 metres, aims to streamline traffic by preventing overlap. It allows smooth flow for vehicles coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading south towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The entire project, which is set to complete by October, will culminate with the opening of a final bridge. This bridge, connecting Garn Al Sabkha Street to Al Asayel Street, spans 943 metres with two lanes in each direction and a total capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour. It is expected to improve traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
According to His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project is 97% complete. Al Tayer emphasized that the development aligns with directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is closely monitored by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The project is critical in connecting key roads, including Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street. It involves constructing four bridges totaling 2,874 metres and enhancing road infrastructure, including intersections, streetlights, traffic signals, drainage networks, and irrigation systems.

Once completed, the project will cut journey times significantly—by 40% from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and by 70% for traffic heading to Jebel Ali Port. This development is part of RTA’s broader master plan to enhance Dubai’s strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads, supporting the city’s growing mobility needs.
