Dubai: Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and regularly inspected, especially during the summer season when road travel increases.
RTA highlighted the importance of proper vehicle maintenance to reduce the risk of sudden mechanical failures that can lead to traffic accidents. It advised drivers to check the condition of tires, brakes, oils, cooling fluids, air conditioning systems, batteries, lights, and windshield wipers, and to inspect for oil or water leaks.
RTA is focused on educating the public to raise awareness among vehicle owners at the start of the summer season. These awareness campaigns are being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Interior as part of the “Safe Summer” initiative. RTA emphasizes that while annual vehicle inspections are required upon ownership renewal, drivers are still responsible for regularly inspecting their vehicles throughout the year. Drivers should check their cars for key traffic safety components before going on road trips or covering long distances.
Bader Al Siri, Executive Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasized the importance of regular vehicle inspection and maintenance for road safety and accident prevention. “Dubai’s traffic safety strategy is based on four pillars: traffic enforcement, road and vehicle engineering, traffic awareness, and the management of vehicle movements across Dubai roads,” he said.
Al Siri noted that RTA has developed a plan to broadcast awareness messages to drivers about the importance of regular maintenance. These messages stress that vehicle safety protects drivers, passengers, and all road users. “We are promoting these messages during summer through social media and at our partners’ customer service centres, including driving institutes, car dealerships, malls, and others,” he added.
Ensuring vehicle safety during summer months is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and preventing potential hazards. Here are some general points to consider:
- Regular Maintenance: Schedule routine maintenance checks, including oil changes, brake inspections, and fluid top-ups, to ensure your vehicle is in top condition to handle the heat.
- Cooling System: Inspect the radiator, coolant levels, hoses, and belts to prevent overheating. Consider flushing the radiator and replacing coolant if necessary.
- Tire Care: Check tire pressure regularly, as heat can cause tires to expand. Ensure proper tread depth and alignment to improve traction and stability, especially on hot pavement.
- Battery Health: High temperatures can accelerate battery fluid evaporation and lead to battery failure. Test the battery’s charge and clean any corrosion on terminals to maintain a reliable power source.
- Air Conditioning: Verify that your vehicle’s air conditioning system is functioning correctly. Clean or replace filters to ensure efficient cooling and airflow throughout the cabin.
- Sun Protection: Park your vehicle in shaded areas whenever possible to reduce interior heat buildup and protect the dashboard, upholstery, and electronics from sun damage.
- Fluid Levels: Monitor fluid levels, including engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid, and replenish as needed to prevent mechanical issues and ensure proper operation.
- Emergency Kit: Equip your vehicle with an emergency kit containing essentials such as water, non-perishable snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, and a roadside assistance contact number.
- Proper Ventilation: Prioritize ventilation by cracking windows slightly when parked to allow hot air to escape and prevent the interior from becoming excessively hot.
- Drive Defensively: Adjust driving habits to accommodate summer conditions, such as maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding aggressive maneuvers, and staying vigilant for signs of overheating or other vehicle issues.
By following these guidelines and staying proactive about vehicle maintenance and safety precautions, you can ensure a smoother and safer driving experience during the summer season.
