MUMBAI: Widespread outages of Microsoft 365 applications disrupted operations for banks, airlines, television networks, and healthcare systems globally. The issues, stemming from a technical glitch in CrowdStrike’s antivirus software used by Microsoft, led to thousands of flight cancellations and delays, impacting both public and retail services.
No delays at Sharjah Airport and Emirates during global Microsoft outage
In India, at the country’s primary airport in Delhi, everything was being done manually. No electric check-in terminals were functioning and gate information was being updated by hand on a white board. Shayaan Shaikh, student at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, spoke to The Brew News about the delay he faced when travelling from Chennai to Mumbai. “My flight was going to depart by 11:30am from Chennai to Mumbai, but due to the Microsoft outage which has created chaos globally the flight got delayed by 2 hours. All the board passes were being checked manually which made it difficult for the staff to handle.”
“Almost 5 to 6 times the cabin crew had to come individually and check for missing passengers. Later they found out a passenger missing but unfortunately due to technical issues it was difficult for them to communicate. While boarding my flight eventually we learnt that the evening flights were postponed to the next day”, Shayaan added.
The delays were only limited to India. In the United States alone, over 1,000 flights were cancelled early in the day, with more than 15,000 flights delayed worldwide. Major airlines were forced to ground flights temporarily. European carriers also reported significant disruptions. Airports across the world faced challenges, with Zurich’s airport notably halting landings for a period.

In addition to the aviation sector, healthcare facilities in Germany cancelled elective surgeries, and doctors in the UK encountered difficulties accessing online systems. Pharmacists in the UK reported disruptions in medicine deliveries and prescription access. Mainstream broadcasters went off-air temporarily, illustrating the widespread impact on media services.
CrowdStrike swiftly identified and addressed the glitch, emphasizing that the issue did not compromise cybersecurity but affected Microsoft 365 apps. While a fix was deployed promptly, the recovery process involved manual interventions due to Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) system failures on individual computers. Cybersecurity experts anticipated ongoing challenges as affected endpoints required individual attention, potentially prolonging the recovery effort.
Overall, the incident highlighted the interconnectedness of global systems and the vulnerabilities posed by technical dependencies across critical sectors, underscoring the need for robust contingency plans in the face of unexpected disruptions.
