Arab fighters Abdelwahab and Al-Selwady aim to inspire at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, showcasing regional talent and martial arts pride.

ABU DHABI: Two of the Arab world’s most prominent mixed martial arts (MMA) talents will return to their roots this weekend as UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi promises a night of high-octane action and regional pride. Egyptian heavyweight Hamdy Abdelwahab and Palestinian lightweight Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady are set to represent the Arab community in front of a passionate local crowd at the Etihad Arena on Saturday, 25 October.

Abdelwahab, Egypt’s first-ever UFC fighter and former Olympic wrestler, faces American Chris Barnett in a highly anticipated bout. The Cairo-born fighter expressed how fighting in Abu Dhabi feels like home. “It feels great to be back in the region. I hope I make the fans proud,” he said. Focused on finishing the fight, he aims to hand Barnett his fourth UFC loss.

The Egyptian also praised Abu Dhabi’s rapid rise in the MMA world, calling it the “home of martial arts in the Middle East.” He commended initiatives like jiu-jitsu being taught in schools and the city’s ability to host some of the most successful global fight events.

Meanwhile, Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady returns to the Octagon after more than a year’s break to face Brazilian Matheus Camilo. Known as “The Pride of Palestine,” Al-Selwady reflected on the importance of this comeback, saying, “This is all part of God’s timing, and right now is my time.”

Fighting in Abu Dhabi, where his MMA journey began, is an emotional moment for Al-Selwady. “Coming back to my roots and seeing fans who supported me from day one is something special,” he shared.

Both fighters have witnessed first-hand the Middle East’s transformation in MMA. Al-Selwady noted that Abu Dhabi has become a regional hub, surpassing earlier hotspots like Jordan. He applauded the healthy rivalry among Arab nations to host major events, adding that it ultimately benefits the fighters.

With the spotlight on Arab fighters and a packed crowd expected at UFC 321, Abdelwahab and Al-Selwady are more than ready to deliver unforgettable performances for their home region.
